- I've used external and internal modems for a while. I prefer external
- ones mainly because an internal modem is very prone to power supply
- noise. I can hear all the computer activity through the modem (Sportster
- 28800) speaker. If you have a Sportster, type ATM2, ATDP<some number>
- and press Esc while the modem is dialing. The modem will hangup but
- won't disable the speaker. Now that you will probable hear the hiss
- depending on what the computer is doing. It is too bad that modem
- designers didn't bother to design noise-proof board layout. For example,
- I can't hear any noise from my Turtle Beach Tropez soundcard because of
- its excellent PCB design. Other cards using the same chips (for example
- TB Monte Carlo) produce very high noise.
